Michael Guma, DO

Biography

Dr. Michael Guma was born in Jersey City in 1962. He was raised in Secaucus and graduated from Secaucus High School in 1980. After graduating from Wake Forest University in 1984 with a Bachelor in Biology he attended the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri where he received his Osteopathic Medical Doctor (D.O) degree in 1989. Dr. Guma then returned to NJ to do his residency in Internal Medicine and sub specialty training in Rheumatology at Saint Michaels Medical Center in Newark, NJ which is part of Seton Hall University's School of Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Guma is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

Dr. Guma is presently the Director of Rheumatology at St. Michael's Medical Center. In July 2015 he became the Assistant Program Director for the Saint Michael's Medical Center / New York Medical College Internal Medicine residency program. He has served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Seton Hall University's Graduate School of Medical Education. He is also the Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at Saint Michael's Medical Center. He also holds a faculty position at the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine where he is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Guma is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his teaching and clinical abilities.

His outstanding accomplishments led him to the following awards of the years – Medical Teaching Attending of the Year at Saint Michael's Medical Center, Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2000. Fellowship in the American College of Physician's in 2007, Castle Connolly Guide to New York Metro Area's Top Doctors from 2009 through 2014. Along with many more Awards, NJ Monthly's Top Doctor Issue from 2009 to 2014. Fellow American College of Osteopathic Internists in 2010 and the Recipient of the Seton Hall University “Many are One” Alumni Service Award representing the School of Health and Medical Sciences during June of 2012. Along with the many awards Dr. Guma has received along the years he also is a Co-Founder / Vice President of the Guma Family Foundation which is a nonprofit charity which has given over $100,000 to the Tomorrows Children's Fund of Hackensack University Medical Center and thousands to the families of children with brain tumors.

With regard to patient care, Dr. Guma's philosophy is, “ I try to treat my patients as I would want to be treated. Its' important to try and give patients the time to tell me their story. There's a lot to be learned when we listen. Patient care is not a one way street, there needs to be communication and respect in both directions.”

Along with the many awards Dr. Guma has received along the years he also is a Co-Founder / Vice President of the Guma Family Foundation which is a nonprofit charity which has given over $100,000 to the Tomorrows Children's Fund of Hackensack University Medical Center and thousands to the families of children with brain tumors. Dr. Guma is currently married with two kids and during his free time he watches all kinds of sports and is a musician himself.
