Choosing the Right Primary Care Provider

Choosing the Right Primary Care Provider

It’s important to understand that a primary care provider is a key individual who will not only know your whole medical history, but will be entirely familiar with your personality, lifestyle, medication reactions, and even your medical treatment preferences.  They are one of the most important relationships you will have in your life, especially when it comes to your health and overall well-being.

As individuals age, having a Pediatrician who knows all there is to know about you can certainly help identify and accommodate necessary life and health changes and needs easily. This is also especially true when it comes to adulthood and the internist you choose to see. With all that said, the team here at Riverside Medical Group wants to share some important tips for choosing the right health care provider.

Important Tips for Choosing a Health Care Provider

Word of Mouth

Talk to your family members and friends to get a recommendation.  When someone you trust recommends a physician, it is a whole lot easier to rely upon their opinion and their referral.  But bear in mind that in some cases, though a doctor may be ideal for your siblings, they may not be the perfect fit for you.

Convenient Location

Since you will be visiting your primary care provider regularly, you want to be sure that they are located near by and convenient to your home.  If you are sick or injured, it’s always better to travel a shorter distance to get the attention you need. When your doctor’s office is close to home, it also tends to be easier to schedule and keep preventative care appointments.

Here at Riverside Medical Group, we have over 28 convenient Adult Medicine locations and we have over 28  Pediatric Locations in New Jersey. We want to make it more convenient for you to receive annual care within New Jersey with our multiple locations spanning the state.

Your Due Diligence

Be sure to perform a bit of research on your potential primary care candidate to ensure that they are board certified, have no medical malpractice cases against them, and that they have met all the licensing and comprehensive exam requirements.

Are They in Your Network?

Once you have identified a candidate or two, be sure to check and see if they are in your medical care network.  You can call the doctor’s office and ask if they are an ‘in-network’ doctor. You don’t want to have to pay more for medical care if you have chosen a doctor that is not in your network. At Riverside Medical Group, we accept most insurances including Medicaid and Medicare. Inquire About the Doctor and Their Practice

You may find it helpful to make a cold call to those candidates you have chosen.  You can get a good feel for the office professionalism during a phone call by asking questions about office protocol, are they accepting new patients, how do they handle blood work and prescriptions, how do they convey test results, can you communicate with your doctor directly, do they have online appointment scheduling and do they generate appointment reminders.  All of this info and the presentation of the staff member will help you in choosing the perfect primary care provider you want and need.

Trust Your Own Instincts

Finally, always trust your own instincts.  You are going to rely upon your primary care provider for a number of health issues.  He or she will be an important advocate for your well being and health, so it is mandatory that you have complete trust in them and are comfortable to talk with them about any issues at all.  Trust your gut and instinct!

Did You Make the Right Choice?

After you have had a first appointment with your new primary care provider, ask yourself a handful of questions to determine if, in fact, you made the right choice.

  • Did you feel comfortable and at ease with the doctor?
  • Were they able to answer all your questions?
  • Did you have ample time to talk with them or did you feel rushed?
  • Did the doctor explain things in a way you could understand?

If you are not completely satisfied with your own responses to these questions, then start your search again.  If, however, you are happy with your responses, then ‘job well done’ – you made the right choice!
